The saddest truth in politics is that people get the leaders they deserve

He apparently died of a heart attack.

Kim Jong Il, North Korea’s longtime leader, has died at 69 of a heart attack, state TV reported on Monday in a “special broadcast.”

State media reported that Kim suffered the heart attack while riding a train on Dec. 17, and that he had been treated for cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases for some time. It said an autopsy was done on Dec. 18 and “fully confirmed” the diagnosis.

His 20-something heir Kim Jong Un now presumably leads the nuclear-armed cult of personality. Yippie.

While the big headline last night reported the death of Kim Jong Il, one of the most significant headlines seems to have gone unnoticed.

The death of the leader of the Velvet Revolution, Vaclav Havel, former playwright turned freedom fighter turned president of Czechoslovakia.

This was a great man, one who should be remembered for all history, not just for the brief time his obituary graced the news section of the ever changing interwebs. He stared into the face of the communists and defeated them, not with guns, but with the ideals of freedom.

Long live his memory. RIP Vaclav Havel and thank you for having the courage to stand up to men no less ruthless than Kim Jong Il and his type.
