The saddest truth in politics is that people get the leaders they deserve

Joseph Goebbels, or David Brock?

I’ve been following the Daily Caller’s exorcism of Media Matters for America with a certain sort of sick fascination. Anyone who has ever read the site knows it exists as a progressive propaganda outlet with a dual role as attack mechanism against anything that threatens progressive messaging, as the latest revelations about the organization’s enemies list show in sickening detail.

The alleged propaganda tactics, substance abuse, cult mentality, bigotry and vicious paranoia displayed by David Brock’s organization reminded me of what I’d read of Joseph Goebbels, the infamous propaganda artist for the National Socialists in Germany. I asked on Twitter:

Can someone explain the difference between @mmfa’s jihad against Fox News employees and Goebbels 1930s attacks on the Jews?

The fact of the matter is that the parallels between the German socialists and our progressive socialists are startling.

Quick… who said this?

“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly – it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.”

It’s a Goebbels quote, that accurately reflects how Media Matters uses Alinsky tactics in their messaging.

Now some more.

“Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.”

Brock, or Goebbels?

“It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion.”

Brock, or Goebbels?

“Eventually the story would spill over into the regular media.”

Brock, or Goebbels?

“It’s all a sham: I have seen, and I know firsthand, indeed from my own pen, how the organized Right has sabotaged not only journalism but also democracy and truth.”

Brock, or Goebbels?

The answers should be relatively obvious as the specific language used cues you to the era of the speaker, but the ominous embrace of parallel language and tactics cannot be missed.

Answers below the fold for those that need them.
