The author of the hissy fit, one Michael Brendan Dougherty, is butt-hurt because the Susan Komen Foundation partnered with Walther firearms to produce a variant of the P22 pistol with a pink slide.
HOPE KILLS: Susan G Komen Foundation Would Rather Be Associated With A Handgun Than Planned Parenthood
Well, here’s an interesting weapon!
The Susan G. Komen Foundation, which collects and distributes money for Breast Cancer research and prevention is in the news for withdrawing its (relatively small) grant from Planned Parenthood.
So the Komen Foundation doesn’t want to be associated with the nation’s largest abortion-provider. But they don’t mind partnering up with a handgun maker.
This gun is a beauty.
And a portion of the sale of each P-22 Hope Edition will be donated to the Seattle Branch of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The op-ed then lists the technical specifications for the P22 and ends with the author’s sarcastic toss off of “Fantastic.”
The simple fact of the matter is that Walther (and Smith & Wesson, and Federal, and other gun industry companies) are sensitive to the concerns of their customer base, 100% of which have mothers, and a large and growing section of which are women themselves. They have decided that one way to give back to their customer base is to contribute to and popularize a charity that until this week was supported by almost everyone… until that charity decided that they would not longer be awarding bypass grants.
A bypass grant is when you give money to a cause so that they can give it to someone else. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of Planned Parenthood locations did not provide on-site mammograms, but instead provided referrals. Komen decided that they would like more direct control over how their money is spent, and so stopped grants to several organizations (not just Planned Parenthood) that only provided referral services.
So why did Planned Parenthood lose funding? Brinker says it has to do with the fact that they do not provide mammograms to women, but only provide mammogram referrals. “It was nothing they were doing wrong,” she explained. “We have decided not to fund, whereever possible, pass-through grants. We were giving them money, they were sending women out for mammograms. What we would like to have are clinics where we can directly fund mammograms.”
Komen had initially funded 19 Planned Parenthood affiliates and, in the wake of new funding policies, will only continue funding three of those chapters. The three that will continue to receive funds are in Northern Colorado, Southern California and Waco, Tex., because “they are the only provider” of breast health services in the areas they serve, Brinker said.
Komen is still supporting the three Planned Parenthood chapters that actually provide breast health services… not that Dougherty or the fuming left cares about that fact at all. They are much more interested in destroying an organization that has spent years raising money to fund the fight against cancer because of imagined political slights to their liberal ideology… oh, and the fact that they feel betrayed that they can’t bully a private organization into doing what liberals want them to do with their money.
Increasingly, leftists are beginning to resemble the buffoonish inanity of a certain Religion of Pieces™ and their unofficial mascot.
While I know it won’t make the Great Unwashed happy, Komen is not likely to collapse as a result of their misguided tantrum, and if the last few days can be interpreted as a guide, it may be that overall donations to Komen will actually increase now that their singularly most controversial grantee has been granted funds only to their branches that actually do the work that Komen–and most decent human beings–supports.
Update: Komen caves to threats from pro-abortion lawmakers. Ultimately it is their call to make, and apparently the felt they had more to lose by sticking with their criteria than by bowing to political pressure. Leftist Rage Boy wins!
Update: “…short of machine gunning schoolchildren, Planned Parenthood can’t make itself look any worse.”
Sean dissects the tactics of Planned Parenthood’s character assassination of Komen. He’s a pretty insightful guy, for a knuckle-dragging gun blogger.
