There have been more than a few of Trayvon Martin’s cult-like apologists on Twitter that have tried to portray George Zimmerman as the devil incarnate, including actions in his past. One of the events they frequently dispute the the claim that Zimmerman was involved in a campaign to seek justice for Sherman Ware, a black homeless man assaulted from behind by the cowardly adult son of a Sanford Police officer.
Zimmerman’s family claimed that he had printed up flyers and organized people to seek justice for Ware, while the local chapter of the NAACP and other black civic groups sat by and shamefully did nothing. Trayvon’s supporters howled with rage over this claim.
The Associated Press just went a long way towards corroborating the claim, as it has discovered a recording of a January 2011 statement in which he ripped the Sanford Police and suggested the outgoing police chief didn’t deserve his pension.
George Zimmerman accused the Sanford police department of corruption more than a year before he shot Trayvon Martin, saying at a public forum the agency covered up the beating of a black homeless man by the son of a white officer.
“I would just like to state that the law is written in black and white,” Zimmerman said during a 90-second statement to city commissioners at a community forum. “It should not and cannot be enforced in the gray for those who are in the thin blue line.”
The forum took place on Jan. 8, 2011, days after a video of the beating went viral on the Internet and then-Sanford Police Chief Brian Tooley was forced to retire. Tooley’s department faced criticism for dragging its feet in arresting Justin Collison, the son of a police lieutenant.
“I’d like to know what action the commission is taking in order to repeal Mr. Tooley’s pension,” Zimmerman said to the commission. “I’m not asking you to repeal his pension; I believe he’s already forfeited his pension by his illegal cover-up in corruption in what happened in his department.”
Zimmerman’s public comments could be important because the Martin family and supporters contend the neighborhood watch volunteer singled Martin out because he was black. Zimmerman has a Peruvian mother and a white father. His supporters have said he is not racist.
Zimmerman further accused SPD officers that he conducted ride-alongs with of being lazy. This seems to undermine the Trayvon cult assertion of some sort of collusion between Zimmerman and the SPD still being repeated.
Very few people could hold up a background with such an obvious record of trying to reach out to other races as Zimmerman, between his mentoring/tutoring black youth to doing the organizing/protesting in the Ware incident that the black community in Sanford apparently failed to do.
At this point, Zimmerman’s persecution and lynching by the collusion of race hustlers, Democratic politicians (particularly the Congressional Black Caucus), and the media reminds me of the Duke Lacrosse trial more than anything else. As to how Zimmerman as personally had his name soiled, he reminds me of Richard Jewel, the Olympic security guard that saved lives in the Atlanta Summer Olympics, only to be tarred by a vicious FBI as a bombing suspect (Eric Robert Rudolph was the bomber). Zimmerman will never have his name restored, and Trayvon’s cultists will have a price on his head for a long time to come.
