The saddest truth in politics is that people get the leaders they deserve

One step from slander

The Democrats and their media must be feeling awfully desperate to run something like this.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has what he says is an informed explanation for why Mitt Romney refuses to release additional tax returns. According a Bain investor, Reid charged, Romney didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years.

“Harry, he didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years,” Reid recounted the person as saying.

“He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” said Reid. “But obviously he can’t release those tax returns. How would it look?

“You guys have said his wealth is $250 million,” Reid went on. “Not a chance in the world. It’s a lot more than that. I mean, you do pretty well if you don’t pay taxes for 10 years when you’re making millions and millions of dollars.”

Reid produced no evidence to provide the flimsiest support to his claim, nor did he explain how a “Bain investor” would have had access to knowledge of Romney’s taxes. ┬áIt’s pathetic that Democrats are reduced to near-slander against Romney since they cannot run on Obama’s record as a abject failure. That they’re putting out such weak speculation months in advance of the election suggests their internal polling shows a blowout for Romney in the making, and they’re desperate to do anything to stop the bleeding.

I wish our so-called press had some guts.

“So, Sen. Reed, you insinuate that Gov. Romney didn’t pay his taxes? Why are you looking into this? Is there a position in the Obama administration not already filled by a tax dodging Democrat? Not sure Gov. Romney wants to work for Pres. Obama.”

I certainly hope the IRS has a team specifically assigned to scrutinize millionaire tax returns. Not an audit, just a careful look every year for red flags that indicate cheating. It would be worth it – disallowing one deduction from that tax return would net more dough than all the taxes I paid last decade.

If that system already is in place and they didn’t flag Romney, then either they’re incompetent or he’s clean.

If that system isn’t in place, they’re incompetent and when Romney wins, he should institute it.
