The saddest truth in politics is that people get the leaders they deserve

The morning after

Some numbers and conventional wisdom are starting to work their way out. Allahpundit has a pretty good handle on those and aptly echos that reaction with the headline “Angry old man yells at Paul Ryan for 90 minutes.”

Ryan is not a gifted debater. Early on he sounded rushed and tense even though he certainly seemed to have a grasp of the subject matter being covered. He got better later on, but he’s wonkish, and not in his element. Even with those impediments, he scored a some clean points, refused to be buffaloed by Biden, and got in the best zingers of the night, though none were stunning enough to be remembered next week.

Pundits on both sides thought Biden was disgraceful and/or disrespectful, his constant fake smiling and interruptions, and grating, purposefully insincere use of the term “my friends” was an annoyance to everyone but the Democratic Party faithful. He did not pick up and moderates/independents last night. Some pundits suggested his real goal was to pump enough vitality into the Obama campaign that Democratic voters don’t simply stay home.

Whenever you have to look at the almost 70-year-old second banana in your act to provide the youth and vitality, you’re in deep, deep trouble.

Joe Biden didn’t “help” the Democratic cause last night, unless merely slowing the flow on a patient bleeding out from an arterial wound can be judged a “success.”

The shift now focuses back to the two remaining Romney-Obama debates, and the constant stream of scandals that seem to be haunting Obama in recent weeks.
