We learned recently that the Tsarnaev brothers may have targeted MIT officer Sean Collier for assassination so that they could steal his guns.
I’ve got a post up at PJ Media about that. Go read it.
These incompetent terrorists failed to secure his duty pistol because they were too dumb to figure out his retention holster, but the NY Times claims that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found with a M4 carbine in the boat beside him when he was arrested, suggesting they might have obtained his patrol rifle.
Now, I find that to be a very suspect claim, as no other outlet supports this claim, and the still photos of their shootout with the Watertown PD shows them only (ineptly) using handguns at the point a rifle would have done them the most good.
But what does it mean if the New York Times was actually correct in their reporting for once?
If that is accurate, then the terrorists obtained a selective-fire rifle that hasn’t been manufactured for civilian purchase in 27 years since the Hughes Amendment to FOPA became law in 1986. Only police, the military, and a handful of collectors have legitimate M4s. Based purely on distribution, they almost had to have obtained their assault rifle (a real one) from the police.
What this tells us is that to determined criminals or terrorists, cops are just walking mini-marts for guns, ammunition, body armor, and radios. Obviously, if we want society to be safe from these threats, then police must be disarmed.
