The saddest truth in politics is that people get the leaders they deserve

Based on your suggestions last week (and some reading of my own), I’ve updated the blogroll with a few new sites that I think offer good reading. Thanks for the suggestions. If I missed your favorites, please drop them in the comments, and if they fit the site, I’ll add ’em.

I also have a technical question for the web developers lurking out there: I wants run an ad for A Failure of Civility on the sidebar (a crude one is up now as a placeholder), and we’re trying to get it set up so that I get a referral commission if folks come from my site to theirs and buy a book. Does anyone out there know how to code that? I’m assuming there needs to be some scripting on both sites, but I never got to that side of the web development business, with most of my work over the years being in simple HTML content updates and redesigns. Any help would be appreciated.

Bob, any scripting/coding to handle a referral link would have to be done on their side. They would just need to provide you with a new link to their site that has the referral code in it, that you would use on your end.

Something like changing the link from “” to “”.

It’s just an update to the link address on your end, no real coding, but on their end they would have to detect that extra bit of info in the link and use that to track any traffic you send them.

  2. Getting a referral commission can be easy or hard depending on how exactly you want to do it. If you want to send readers to, say, Amazon with a link to a specific book, you can do that — sign up as an amazon affiliate, generate a link with their tools, and post the HTML on your site. No custom scripting needed, Amazon will generate it automatically and you past it in place. Although I haven’t done it, I imagine the Barnes and Noble program works similarly.

If you want to send readers to a landing page on a website other than Amazon or Barnes and Noble you will probably need to come up with something a little more complex. As the “linking side” though it’s still relatively easy. All you need to do is make sure that the link you use has a parameter that you agree with the landing page to use. (It will look something like this: http://url?

The landing site will then need to write code on their server, or process their log files, to notice the extra parameter, track whether a purchase actually occurs, and pay you appropriate referral fees. That’s not a trivial task, but you don’t have to do it yourself.

FYI, Ace and Insty have that setup, if you want to talk to them for personal experience with this.

Bob you have been doing a fine job on the gun rights and GZ things of late – but where are the articles on this sort of thing?:

This admin is so lawless it is tyranny.

I think Obamacare is the most threatening thing coming at us right now. And stuff like this needs to be shouted from the rooftops.
